Back from vacation

We finally returned from a month long vacation in South Africa and London. It was great to relax and see family and friends again. We stayed at a nice hotel for a week in Plettenberg Bay. I have pictures of the view from the room here, here, here and here. While there, we went to Birds of Eden, the largest free flight aviary in the world - I have pictures of this here, here, here, here, here, here, here, here and here. We stayed in our house in Cape Town the rest of the time. I have some pictures of the garden here and here (taken on a misty morning). While in Cape Town, Athena and I visited the beach at a little town called Scarborough on our fourth wedding anniversary (we were previously married there). I have some pictures from the exact location here, here and here. Finally, we landed up back in London for a few days. We stayed at an old (but nice) hotel. Some pictures taken from/of the hotel here, here and here. We spent some time in Picadilly Circus - some pics here, here and here. For the most part I avoided computers completely . Though I managed to punctuate the vacation by giving one talk on "The Future of Computer Graphics Hardware and Software" at the University of Cape Town , which was great fun.

Bags

We did a little shopping at Longs Drugs the other day. We noticed that they now have those environmentally friendly reusable tote shopping bags. Of course we bought some - the cashier was kind enough to pack them into a plastic bag for us...

Vist to SF (cont.)

Today we had lunch at a place called Cafe Gratitude. This is the first enitirely "raw" meal I have ever had (well... excluding salads), and it was delicious - they actually have very tasty raw pizza and raw double chocolate cakes. It was definitely worth facing the daunting task of finding parking in San Francisco.

Yesterday I drove up to San Francisco with the wife and mother-in-law. We saw the band Covenant. This is one of my favourite bands - seeing them after listening to them for 10 years was great. Possibly the best live show I have seen. The supporting band, Rotersand, was also fairly impressive.

How to write the worst possible résumé for a software engineering position.Over the past few years I have worked with some pretty talented people. To keep up standards I have had to interview a lot of people and have therefore read through many hundreds of résumés. When I was working in South Africa I really received interesting résumés... and by interesting I mean bad. (more...)
